Jake Armerding/Gretel :8 pm at Toad. Armerding isn’t bluegrass in the strictest sense of the genre, but he is an amazing musican and storyteller. His influences are wide ranging and bluegrass is among them. Pop is too , which is what makes him such a pleasure to see. You never know what you are going to get, but it is always good. It’s kind of like opening up a birthday present from your best friend. He writes clever and poignant original songs as well as covers. I’ve seen him cover everything from “Working on a building” to Def Leopard’s “Armageddon it” ( not to mention Sir Mix-A-Lots “Baby got back”- played on the acousitc guitar). You will not be disapointed at a Jake Armerding show.
If you miss Jake tonight, he’s playing Club Passim on Friday.
I haven’t actually heard Gretel yet except for on thier website. They sounded fantastic though. They will be at Toad every Tuesday night in January. I heard about them after meeting the lead singer outside of Toad a couple weeks ago after catching Miss Tess and the bonton parade and she was absolutely lovely.
Twangy Thing number 2
Tony Watt and Friends 10 pm: Cantab. An evening of stellar picking and harmonious singing. Tony is being accompanied by some fabulous friends: Steve Watt (of True Life Bluegrass) on banjo
Flynn Cohen (Halali, etc.) on mandolin
Mike Barnett (Jesse McReynolds) on fiddle
Amanda Kowalski (formerly with April Verch, Adrienne Young, etc.) on bass. Guests include Aiofe O’donovan from Crooked Still whose voice will leave you begging for more. As well as :
Liz Simmons (Chagrin River)
Joe Singleton (Crazy Creek)
The last time I saw Tony Watt at the Cantab is was packed so I suggest getting there early. There is no cover , rather a suggested $5 hat donation. All money goes directly to the band- it’s the only way they get paid. It’s a small price for some stellar music in a bar that always makes you feel like you have come home.
Hey ya’ll. Welcome to Bluegrass in my Pocket. This blog will contain musings, cd reviews, profiles on some of my favorite musicans, bands, etc…, festival reviews and anything else I can come up with related to the tingly twang that makes me swoon.
