WYEP’s Music Blog: Tommy Ramone goes Bluegrass

Who says punk and bluegrass can’t mix? not sure how I feel about this but it should be an uh….. interesting album…

I took a brief respite from my cold city apartment to visit my grandmother in her warm house. There’s just something about Grandmothers. Did I mention she has a fireplace?

My apartment is still freezing, but my spirits should be on fire again since it is Sunday and if you’ve been reading, you know what that means:

Tradtional Ties on Wyep. (2-11-07) 10 pm.

It streams over the internet so you have no excuse not to listen. Tonight John Trout will feature an interview with Russel Johnson of the Grass Cats and new bluegrass from the Infamous Stringdusters.

I’ll admit that I don’t know much about Russell Johnson, but I am excited to learn. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Infamous Stringdusters live and they are hot! The Stringdusters are a powerhouse of young talented musicans and singers. They also are based in my dream destination- Nashville ( someday….*sigh*)

Better news for me and those of you who have tickets- I get to see the Stringdusters perform next weekend at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival ( this festival deserves it’s own post, so maybe while listening to Traditional Ties tonight I will write one) All I will say is that this Festival is amazing. As of posting this, weekend tickets are sold out but there are still day passes available for Friday and Sunday. – a very kind soul bought me a weekend pass for my birthday and I am very thankful!

sidebar: I am incredibly excited right now as I just spent four hours this after noon listening to Loose Ends in Newton and they were fabulous!

Fellow bluegrass junkies don’t forget to tune your computers to WYEP tonight at 8 to hear the best streaming bluegrass around. Traditional Ties at 10 pm ( with John Trout) will feature an interview with Tim Shelton of NewFound Road and new bluegrass from Eric Uglum. Trout will also have several new singles on tonight’s program.
This is an excellent program to end your busy week and to listen to post superbowl.

post script: this show airs every Sunday night- sorry for not dating this post in the text…

Hmmmm…. damn, Wyep’s night of bluegrass is winding up and I’m going a bit crazy. Call this obsession. Call this what you want. I’ve been dancing round my room in between writing snippets for this and a couple of other things.

So gents and gals, twangy dreams till I write again.

A second cousin told me about this station over the summer and I can’t thank him enough. I’m also extremely grateful for the technology that allows me to listen to a station in Pittsburg while residing in Massachusetts.

If you’re looking for something to listen to while recovering from the weekend, I highly recommend WYEP’s streaming Sunday night radio. It’s four hours of traditional and modern bluegrass with some country. Be warned… These shows are addictive- two separate shows with two different hosts back to back. The first show runs from 8-10 pm and is a bluegrass jam session. The second is called Traditional Ties and goes from 10-12. The music is real and inspiring. The interviews are current and provocative and if you’re like me the whole thing might turn you on as well.
